The big milestone has now passed for the preservice group, by which I mean the microteaching sessions. It was so refreshing to see everyone in my groups up on their feet “being” the teacher. I could see definite signs that the planning and designing lessons had been learned and applied, and areas where trainees were wrestling with the challenges of managing all aspects of a lesson. From now on the emphasis must be on settling into placement, getting their minds around the modules and developing their reflective practice skills.
The video clip from Good Will Hunting (see below) is particularly relevant here, illustrating that we can only really know something when we have experienced it. Microteaches and the Sistene Chapel – the sublime to the ridiculous (but which is which?)
